I did it! I finally sat down with the Emergent Strategy book and my notepad and made some notes on the ideas that really struck me. I also started reading Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey aka the Nap Ministry. It's currently 99p on the evil river website (not an affiliate link) And I bought Humble Consulting by Edgar H Schein. Now I possibly need to put some discipline in around seeing a book to completion before starting the next one BUT.... I got some lovely insights as the three books jumbled around in my brain. Capitalism needs jobs to be joyless because a) workers need to be interchangable, easily replaceable widgets, b) joy needs to be paid for to ensure capitalism has something to do and c) joy needs to be rare and out of reach for some people. So what to do about it? I guess we have to make joy where we can find it. The Schein quote that I keep bumping up against is "An organisation can only do what is consistent with its culture..." which then leads me to adrienne maree brown's question of who do we need to be to bring into reality the future that we dream of? |
Recent articles I'm going to get better at sending these newsletters out every week and it's not 10pm so I'm already one up on last week!! Since my list is so small, if you want to hit reply, we can have a conversation about any of the things I share. I'll also use this weekly sharing to mention my coaching offerings. I'm looking to set up my first group coaching programme next month (which is just a couple of weeks away!), I'll let you know more in the coming weeks. Have a lovely week and let's catch up soon x |

Easing the Sunday Scaries Sunday 6th October Content notice: I talk about grief and bereavement this week. Skip this email if you need to. Come back on a better day or I'll speak to you next week. x And now it's October. 50% of the marketing emails in my inbox are trying to get me ready for Christmas or make plans for a great 2025. Honestly, I've barely thought about next week let alone next year! I did try, during September, some paper planning techniques. I obviously want to buy a beautiful...
Easing the Sunday Scaries Sunday 28th April 2024 Sheepishly resurfacing after a month hiding from the Sunday Scaries. I went for a long walk this morning and have committed to a month of showing up on social media and saying stuff (it's called the Garbage Post challenge - you have to post 100 times within 30 days) so I thought I would reappear here too. Hope your Sunday's haven't been too scary this month. Recent articles What I'm reading I bought this second hand, it arrived Saturday morning...
Easing the Sunday Scaries Sunday 17/3/24 For the first time in a long time, I don't have the Sunday Scaries. I've been reading a lot and I think I've finally worked out how to align the day job with my mission of working in social justice. It's super early days but I'm going to check in with some colleagues, see if they think my idea has legs and maybe create a bit of squad around my idea. You know I'm a huge Cal Newport fan and he has, since "So Good They Can't Ignore You"*, urged his...
